Education and Parental Responsibility

Education, Misbehaviour, and Parental Responsibility: An Open Dialogue on School and Family

The Director of CEFA Schools, Gianni Vicari, representing MOIGE (Italian Parents' Movement), participated on Saturday, November 30, in Uno Mattina in Famiglia to deal with a highly relevant social issue: parental responsibility and the fundamental role of parents in their children’s upbringing.

The debate was sparked by an incident in which the parents of a 14-year-old student were condemned to pay damages for failing to adequately educate their daughter, who had committed an act of violence against a classmate. This case highlighted a critical issue: how to prevent and address inappropriate behaviour among young people, and what roles families, schools, and society must play in ensuring a comprehensive education.

Vicari emphasized that public discourse often focuses on the generic responsibilities of families and schools without delving into effective tools to tackle and prevent problematic situations. The discussion stressed the importance of fostering greater collaboration between families and schools, reinforcing value-based education as the core component of children’s path in their growth and development, and providing concrete support for parents, educators, and young people to consciously navigate the educational challenges of today’s society.

What emerges, therefore, is a call to join efforts to create an educational environment that is not only reactive but, above all, preventive. The contributions of MOIGE and CEFA Schools aim to build a bridge between institutions and families, offering young people a solid context for their growth.
